Effects of Surface and Top Wind Shear on the Spatial Organization of Marine Stratocumulus‐Topped Boundary Layers

The convective nature of Stratocumulus topped boundary layers (STBL) involves the motion updrafts and downdrafts, driven by surface fluxes radiative cooling, respectively. balance between shear buoyant forcings at can determine organization cellular roll structures. We investigate effect varying top STBL using Large Eddy Simulations, taking DYCOMS II RF01 as a base case. focus on spatial identification following features: coherent observe how they are affected shear. Stronger organizes in rolls, causes less well-mixed thermodynamic profiles, decreases cloud fraction liquid water path (LWP). also LWP more than shear, thinning from top. Features with stronger associated net downward momentum transport show early signs decoupling. Classifying downdrafts based their vertical span horizontal size confirms dominance tall objects spanning whole STBL. Tall occupy 30% volume STBL, while short ones 1%. For updraft downdraft fluxes, these explain 65% velocity variance 83% buoyancy flux, average. weakens contribution to turbulent tilts otherwise development updrafts.
